In 1900, the German Football Association (DFB) was officially established. The German national team played their first official match in 1908. After World War II, Germany was divided into three parts: Federal Germany, Democratic Germany, and Saarland, all of which were banned from participating in international competitions. In 1954, the Federal Republic of Germany defeated Hungary in the World Cup final and won the championship. In 1972, the Federal Republic of Germany participated in the European Cup for the first time and won the championship. The 1974 World Cup was held in West Germany, where the Federal Republic of Germany faced the Netherlands in the final and ultimately won 2-1, winning their second World Cup championship. After the reunification of Germany in 1990, the football teams of East and West Germany merged. In the 1996 European Championship, the German team defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 and won their first international championship since reunification. In 2004, Klinsmann took over as the coach of the German national team. In the 2006 World Cup, the German team defeated Portugal to achieve third place. After the World Cup, Klinsmann left and L ö w took over. In the 2014 World Cup, the German team remained unbeaten with 6 wins and 1 draw, winning their fourth World Cup championship. In the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, the German team failed to advance from the group stage for two consecutive matches. On June 15, 2024, in the opening match of the European Championship and the first round of Group A, Germany defeated Scotland 5-1. On June 30th, in the round of 16 of the European Championship, Germany defeated Denmark 2-0 and advanced to the quarter finals. On July 6th, in the quarterfinals of the European Championship, the German team lost 1-2 to the Spanish team after extra time and was eliminated from the quarter finals.
